The Treaty of Wachale

In 1889, Italy connived to trick Emperor
Menelik into signing a Treaty that would
have made Ethiopia an Italian
Protectorate: according to the Amharic
translation of the Treaty, the Emperor
had only agreed to make Italy a
Protectorate "if the Emperor chooses."

Emperor Menelik argued, "I would never
give any nation power over Ethiopia;" he
then ordered Italy to publicly renounce
its claim over Ethiopia and to return to
previously agreed boarders  in the 1889
Treaty, but Italy refused.  Such were the
events that lead to the Battle of  Adwa
six years later.

The Battle of ADWA
March 1, 1896
As early as 1896, Ethiopia remained the last free nation on
continental Africa that had never been colonized by
Europeans.  When Ethiopia won the Battle of Adwa on
March 1, 1896,  Ethiopia became the First African nation
to ever win a major military victory over a powerful
European colonizer...
Colonial Italy under-estimated
Ethiopian military genesis and
strategic skill, arrogantly believing
that Black Ethiopioans would
never win a major battle
over the "superior" European race...
but Ethiopia was victorious
and such a victory for Black Africa
during the time of
European expansionism,
global colonization and
the redistribution
of the world's wealth
encouraged the African Diaspora's
dreams of liberation from brutal
oppressive colonizers.
Blacks in America and the Caribbean
thus perceived the
Ethiopian Victory at Adwa
as a fulfillment of Bible prophecy.
